HOLBOX
was inhabited by the mayas long before the first spanish arrived
in the early XVI century.
Later on even english woodcutters and pirates based their operations
on this island, seeking for a secure hideaway, reliable food supplies
and fresh water from the Yalahau well.
Surprisingly, white settlers were not bodered during the long uprising
of the mayas (1847 - 1901) who took control over most of the Yucatan
Peninsula, leaving Holbox, Isla Mujeres and Cozumel unharmed.
Late last century the village was relocated a few miles NE after
a devasteting Hurricane. Although Holboxeans enjoyed for a while
good profits from their coconut plantations, they developed during
the last decades a growing fishing activity due to the richness
of the sorrounding sea.
None the less, their small tourism infrastrucure and their relaxed
lifestyle will offer you some unforgetable vacations.
