Slams in a premier wilderness fly and spinfishing destination.
Tarpon, snook also Snapper, Barracuda and Others.
|
 |
Yahalau
means shallow in maya and is also the name of the lagoon wich
runs over 20 miles along the Holbox island. It is surrounded
by countless unfished sand and turtle grass flats support
the abundant game fish species. Our Twenty productive flats
and lagoons have now been maped and we are continuing to explore
new areas. |
|
| TARPON: |
These
acrobats can be finicky so don't expect a hook-up on every
effort, and expecto to land one out of five you hook. Nursery
tarpon of 5 to 15 lbs provide great light tackle action year
round. During spring and summer the big boys move in exceeding
100 lbs. Bing some equipment and bit of duck. |
|
| PERMIT: |
The
most elusive part of the Gran Slam can be found feeding on
crabs in the slightly deeper areas of the flats. These are
the bigger tails you'll see, they sometimes school in numbers
of five to twenty, and rarely stop very long. Permit can be
caught year around with the best fishing from april to august. |
|
| SNOOK: |
Snook
can also be caught year around, being the best season, april/
august. They live along the mangroves and some people prefer
to blind cast diver, popper, and slider patterns to the mangroves,
while others will enhoy the early morning spotting of the
larger fish along the open points, flats an deep cuts. They
are large, 10-20 lbs, and picky of you spot them on a flat
or open area. The smaller ones, "robalitos", are
much more cooperative. |

| BARRACUDA: |
These
are the fastest swimming, about 30 miles an hour, They come
in all sizes and are great fun in the back-country lagoons.
When you hook up they rocket powered jumps in the sjallow
lagoons where there is nowhere to go but up. Some consider
these their favorite gamefish. |
|
| SNAPPER: |
You'll
find three species of snapper here: mangrove, cubera and mutton.
Mangroves are most common and get up to 10 lbs, Cubera to
20 lbs and Muttons to 5 lbs are around, but only a few. |
|
| OTHERS: |
The Yalahau
Lagoon and Gulf waters include spotted seatrout, spanish
and king mackerel, jewfish, grouper and other species. We
have not yet developed the off-shore blue water fishing,
but know there are dorado (mahi mahi), tuna, salifish and
wahoo in good numbers.
Our
Restaurant-Bar "El Canguay" is the social area
where stories can be told and plans made for the next day.
